Josh has given his backing for Leeds to bid for European Capital of Culture in 2023.

Speaking to The City Talking, Josh said: “After winning a little bit of European glory, and bringing a little bit of European glory back to Leeds, that might add a little bit to it - but I definitely think Leeds should bid for European Capital of Culture.”

European Champion Josh Warrington with Billy Sharp, Emma Bentley & Danny Mcguire - Leeds Sport United

After his European title win at the weekend, Leeds' own The City Talking brought Josh together with three stars of local sport: Billy Sharp of Leeds United, Emma Bentley of Leeds Ladies and Danny McGuire of Leeds Rhinos.

“For me, Leeds is the best city in the world,” said Josh. "After winning the British title, something else that I’ve always wanted to do is win the European title and bring a bit of European glory back to Leeds.

“I’ve dreamt of that - of being stood there, singing ‘We are the Champions, Champions of Europe’ - I’ve thought about it many a time. It sounds daft but it was like a living dream on Saturday with all those fans coming out for me, all these Leeds legends around us. It was something special.”

Josh Warrington is European Featherweight Champion

With a superb fourth round knockout of Davide Dieli at Leeds First Direct Arena, Josh Warrington added the European Featherweight title to his British and Commonwealth belts.

Josh looked ready to become triple champion from the moment he stepped into the ring, roared on by a passionate home crowd who helped make it an unforgettable night for Leeds sport.

Dieli was never given a chance as Josh took and kept control of the fight, until a sudden burst of combination punches in the first round put Dieli on the canvas; the Italian got back on his feet after an eight count, only for a storm of unanswered punches from Josh to force the referee to step in and end the fight.

After the fight Josh paid tribute to the fans who packed the Arena and created a superb and unique Leeds atmosphere around the ring.

"How can I not get fired up with all these fans?" he told Sky Sports. "They are absolutely amazing. I don't know any other place in the country which creates an atmosphere like this.

"It's hard not to get carried away because they get you very fired up, but I use all the energy from the crowd and take it into the ring. They keep me going from the first bell to the last."
